The altiplano route to Chivay is certainly the best way to visit the Colca Canyon and its villages. Chivay, for example, is one of the most beautiful small towns in the area, where ancient traditions and customs have prevailed through generations.
Our team will pick you up at the accommodation to start our next adventure towards Chivay on a tourist bus. On the way, we’ll make a few stops to appreciate the different sceneries of this region.
Our first stop will be in Lagunillas, where we’ll watch different types of birds in their natural habitat. Next, we’ll continue to Pampa Cañahuas, where we’ll appreciate the beautiful scenery while drinking Coca tea to help us with any altitude sickness symptoms we may have.
Afterward, we’ll arrive at Patapampa, this strategic location will give us a view of the region’s volcanoes. Later, we’ll be arriving in Chivay around 01:00 p.m. You will have the afternoon off to enjoy the natural wonders of Chivay and the famous hot springs.

06:20h - 06:25h | Departure from Puno to Chivay
Once we are ready, we’ll head towards the picturesque Chivay town, a beautiful village located on the banks of the Colca River. But first, we’ll make a few stops on the way so you can experience the real Peruvian Andes!
08:30h - 08:40h | Stop at Lagunillas Viewpoint
This beautiful water body is located at 4,174 meters above sea level and has an extension of 66 km2. Lagunillas is home to over 25 bird species, all endemic from the Andes. Here we’ll have a quick stop for birdwatching and appreciating the authentic scenery of the region.
10:15h - 10:40h | Visit to Pampa Cañahuas
Once in the Arequipa region, we’ll visit the Pampa Cañahuas in the Aguada Blanca National Reserve, a beautiful natural spot home to extensive flora and fauna.
11:15h - 11:30h | Stop at Patapampa Viewpoint
This will be our last stop on the way to Chivay, one of the highest points of the road, located at 4,910 meters above sea level. From here, you’ll be able to see the volcanoes that guard the White City of Arequipa and many other natural wonders.
12:00h - 12:30h | Arrival in Chivay
We’ll be arriving in Chivay just about lunchtime, take your time to take in the beautiful scenery of the village and start exploring it like a local expert!
As you may know, the Sillustani Tombs are located in the Puno region, only 45 minutes away from the city. For that reason, it is an easy day trip from the Folkloric Capital of Peru.
