Adventures in Puno

Adventures in Puno

Not many of you know about this but the Puno region is so much more than visiting Lake Titicaca on a day tour. There are so many things to do in and out of the lake that you must certainly know about so you can experience the Andean highlands to its fullest.

For that reason, we have prepared this blog to show you some extraordinary activities to do in the surroundings of the so-called Folkloric Capital of Peru. Each of them is doable in a full-day excursion, or if you’re looking to get immersed in the natural and cultural heritage of the place you could extend them as long as you want.

As you get ready to explore Peru, there are so many attractions that not many travel operators talk about since they have been focused on the same touristic destinations for decades. Luckily for you, we want you to know all the options available so you can organize the best trip off the beaten track.

1. Kayak in Lake Titicaca

For those looking to spice up their adventure in Lake Titicaca, here’s an activity that will surely get your attention. In case you didn’t know, it is possible to experience this massive water body at 3,812 meters above sea level in a more intimate way.

The kayaking activity will take you through its calm deep-blue waters to an unforgettable natural scenery, complemented by artificial man-made floating islands, totora reed boats, and a paradise hidden from the outside world full of ancestral traditions and culture.

You can join this activity in a multiple-day excursion through the lake, visiting the most popular islands, camping in evergreen valleys, and staying at a family lodging, a beautiful natural and cultural experience.

Also, there are one-day tour options, where you get to do the activity for around an hour to the Uros Floating Islands to later visit the beautiful Taquile Island on a motor boat.

2. Canopy in Juli Beach

We know this might sound weird to you since Puno is no way near the coast but the Lake Titicaca shores have created a beach visited by many locals and tourists, located 1.5 hours away from the city of Puno.

Juli Beach is located near a town with the same name, which has a distinctive catholic religious setting since many Spanish Jesuits moved here during the 1500s. They constructed several temples in this region, leaving an important historical and cultural heritage in one of the most remote locations within the region.

On the other hand, the main attraction here is "Juli Beach", a beautiful natural scenery where you’ll be able to practice canopy, zip-lining, and much more.

3. Mountain Biking in Ccopamaya

While exploring the Peruvian highlands, we’ve realized how diverse it is. From rock-climbing activities to kayaking in the highest navigable lake in the world, we thought that would be all but turns out, there’s so much to see and explore that we had to make an entire blog about it.

Ccopamaya is a small region located over 3,800 meters above sea level, where you can practice one of the most sought-after adventure sports in the Andes, mountain biking. This mountainous road offers the perfect setting for those looking for an adrenaline-packed experience in Puno.

The route will take you through beautiful landscapes, archeological sites, and rural areas, where culture overflows every inch of it. If you’re eager to try this, make sure to make a stop in the Fertility Temple of Chucuito, but remember to be fully acclimated before committing to this adventure.

4. Hike to the Totorani Waterfalls

These waterfalls are located at a 25-minute walk from the Totorani community, which is only 30 minutes away from the Folkloric Capital of Peru. If you have some spare time in Puno, but don’t want to visit the same attractions as everyone, this is the way to go.

The walk will take you through beautiful natural scenery, where croplands and rural houses will welcome your way to the 50-meter waterfalls. A totally easy day trip from the beautiful Puno city.

5. Parascending in Capachica

Make your way up to the clouds and get a beautiful bird’s eye view of the vast Lake Titicaca and its surroundings. The adventure sport consists of a journey by motorboat through this majestic water body, where you’ll be strapped on a parachute that will raise you up to the sky in a matter of seconds.

Important Note: It is worth mentioning that we do not operate any of these activities though we do offer the other activities starting from Puno. If you wish to include any of these activities in your travel itinerary, make sure to contact our travel agents.
