Best Time to Visit Amazonas

Best Time to Visit Amazonas

Just like its name, this region is near the Amazon River, the world’s mightiest river, and the Amazon Rainforest, one of the few places that house several species of flora, aquatic wildlife, and earth creatures in the world. This area is also called “ The earth’s lungs” as it houses several national parks and countless trees.

Visiting this often-overlooked region in Peru is truly an adventure, not only for wanderlust travelers but also for everyone willing to see breathtaking landscapes and nature at its best. However, let’s see first how’s the weather like in this region, and what’s the best time to visit the Amazon rainforest.

Amazonas Weather month by month

Amazonas is located between “La Sierra y Selva”. That means that some areas in Amazonas are located between the jungle and the elevated, mountainous areas of Peru.

All over the year, its climate may change in rains, and sunny days with warm summers. The yearly average temperature in Chachapoyas is 23°C. On the other side, the minimum temperature is 13 C. The annual rainfall is 2854mm, sometimes with high water rainfall.

Between December and March, is the high water season. The rivers become violent, and there’s the chance of flooding depending on the area. Despite these conditions, this is the finest time to explore the region by canoe or kayak because the water level is at its highest, allowing access to previously inaccessible locations. Additionally, wildlife is more active, which improves birdwatching and wildlife viewing.

Between April and September, the climate is just OK. At noon, the average temperature is  22°C. Showers are still present but are unusual. In case you want to see wildlife or fauna, this is not the best time to do it as animals are constantly moving looking for water.

During these months, we recommend fishing, as fish gather in small portions of water. You’ll perform outdoor activities, such as excursions or hiking without feeling insecure that rain may ruin your plans. On the negative side, the temperature may reach 40 C

In October and November, the climate may be unpredictable as the transition between wet and dry seasons. Expect sudden and occasional showers, combined with some heavy rainfall.

Seasons in Amazonas

Rainy Season

The rainy season in Chahcapoyas runs between December and March approximately. Despite the heavy amount of rainfall, we can say that this is the best season to enjoy Peruvian Amazonia at its fullest because you’ll see lush and green landscapes everywhere, and if you love animals, you’ll see the best of Peru’s fauna and flora.

The rivers rise, producing an amazing water landscape for those exploring the Amazon River by canoe or boat, and the vegetation grows even lusher and greener. In addition, this season allows you to watch the entire life cycle of many plant and animal species, making it an exciting time to observe wildlife if we compare it to drier months.

Immersing oneself in the local culture during these months can also be quite gratifying, providing an authentic and thorough view of life in the Peruvian Amazon. Despite the many advantages this season offers, keep in mind that due to the heavy rainfall authorities may close the main attractions, paths, roads, and trails. That’s why we recommend being cautious if you’re in the Peruvian jungle during this season, as the activities to perform may become uncomfortable or dangerous.

Dry Season

The dry season is, according to some adventurers, the best time to visit the Peruvian Jungle. The dry season extends from May to September. You won’t feel danger at all because the rivers are quiet and the rain probability is little.

Performing outdoor activities is ok at this time without feeling the chance weather may change your schedule. On the other hand, we feel sorry to tell you this, but nothing’s perfect. On dry season, weather may reach 40 C or more making your trip extenuating.

It's important to keep in mind that, despite being known as the "dry season," sporadic but heavy downpours of rain might happen unexpectedly and revitalize the verdant foliage.

It's also vital to remember that since this is a popular season for travel, there might be more people here than usual. The enchantment and splendor of the Amazon rainforest during the dry season, however, are experiences worth enjoying despite these small drawbacks

And the best time is…

Although the weather in Amazonia is pleasant all year round, June to November is particularly a good period for people who wish to spend more time comfortably exploring this area.

The dry season provides way to brighter days and easier-to-access paths throughout these months, which facilitates outdoor pursuits like hiking, trekking, and birdwatching. However,  if you are ok with rain or you love it,  it's not a bad idea to travel during wet season.

This time of year delivers an amazing biodiversity experience despite the rain. For instance, it could be better to schedule your trip during the rainy season if your primary objective is to take in the breathtaking waterfalls in the area. The waterfalls are at their most spectacular during this time of year, with stronger and more plentiful water flows that astonish onlookers.

In light of the aforementioned,  the ideal time of year to visit this area will depend on your interests, tastes, and what you expect from this region. The Peruvian rainforest may be explored year-round, so it all depends on why you are traveling there. Opening its doors to you, the Amazonas region offers unique features in wet and dry seasons.
