If you’re thinking about taking a trip to the Peruvian Amazon and its attractions, you are an adventurer and wanderlust traveler. However, the Amazon rainforest may hold some mysteries and creatures that may be dangerous. Don’t let this disappoint you, if you keep in mind our tips, we assure you you’ll have a great time in the Amazon jungle.
Watch the mosquitoes! In the jungle, there are numerous wild and dangerous creatures around, but one of them is a tiny one, we’re talking about the mosquitoes. During the day, and even night these unpleasant insects may cause you some trouble, as their bite could be painful or your skin may get red.
Wearing trekking pants will prevent mosquito bites, which can leave your skin red and itchy. Bring a good insect repellent and apply it to the uncovered zones of your body every hour. Believe us when we tell you, you'll appreciate this tip.
Be careful not to get sunburned. Although the citadel has trees that provide shade and freshness, many areas of interest are exposed to the sun, so don't forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
The early bird catches the worm. Even though the Amazonas area is huge, is the least populated area in the whole of Peru. When in there, you’ll realize that the distances are larger from village to village, for example. When in Chachapoyas, we recommend leaving your accommodation as soon as possible so you can get back early.
Know the cable car. In Chachapoyas, there’s a cable car that will add new memories to your jungle trip, but keep in mind that this transport doesn’t operate on Mondays. After buying the ticket, keep your cable car ticket with you.
Have some “sun” in your pocket. The “sol” (sun) is Peru’s official currency. Several tourist establishments accept dollars, but we recommend you keep in hand some cash so you won’t have any issues.
Don’t let nature stop your plans. Peru has two main seasons, dry and rainy seasons, however, in some areas due to climate change, weather could be unpredictable. Bring a pair of good trek shoes and comfortable rain gear.
Stay fit. Depending on how many days you’ll spend in Chachapoyas or what places you’ll visit, you have to be in shape to hike more than 3 hours per day. Be sure to bring everything you may need, including water, energy bars, some snacks, and trekking poles. Keep in mind that some areas are more than 2500 meters above sea level.
Go with a guide. Hiring a guide who knows the area is essential rather than just a recommendation. Some places are accessible only with a guide, besides you’ll learn more about Chachapoyas past and present with an expert. Guides know good places like rescue centers, hospitals, police stations, etc if something could happen.
Get your shot. In your time to visit Amazonas, have a great time getting some vaccinations against yellow fever, for example.
