Condechaca Archaeological Complex

Condechaca Archaeological Complex

The district of Levanto is in the province of Chachapoyas, Amazonas department houses many archaeological remains in between the cloud forest. They are the living proof of the cultures that passed through this territory. One of these pre-Hispanic legacies is the Archaeological site of Condechaca.

The Archaeological Complex of Condechaca comprises two clearly differentiated sectors. In the area called Condechaca I, there are circular structures. Their walls have friezes in the form of diamonds, these may represent the protective gods of the people. The Chachapoyas people may have lived in these structures. The diamond of the friezes is the representation of the jaguar, shown through the shape of its eyes.

The second part of the Complex is Condechaca II. It has structures like Condechaca I, almost two kilometers from the previous sector. Condechaca II has about thirty circular structures. They are in better shape and were likely the homes of the old Chachapoyas people in the pre-Inca period.

Most Chachapoyas constructions are circular, with very few being rectangular. They led many authors to suggest that this style of construction could be linked to watching celestial bodies. But, this is still debatable. It is important to mention that Chachapoyas constructions are generally found in hard-to-reach places amid dense jungles or even cliffs.

Visiting this beautiful place is a good alternative. It lets you learn about part of the culture of the former Chachapoyas people, as well as their beliefs and gods. The hike to the two parts of the complex is also an interesting trek. It has great views for taking photos of beautiful natural scenes.
