Nevado Pastoruri Tour

Nevado Pastoruri Tour

If you’re already here then that means you’re organizing a trip to the Ancash region or maybe just checking options for things to do in Huaraz. Nevado Pastoruri is one of the most sought-after attractions within the Cordillera Blanca, thanks to its impressive scenery and the 2-kilometer-long Pastoruri Glacier.

This towering snow-capped mountain sits at an elevation of 5,240 meters above sea level, which is why you need to be properly acclimatized before visiting this natural wonder. However, getting to Nevado Pastoruri won’t be an issue since it is the easiest-to-get-to attraction in the Huascarán National Park.

That doesn’t mean that you should underestimate the altitude! We want you to have a fun but also safe experience, which is why we’ve added a few tips at the end of this post to help you prevent or deal with altitude sickness.

About Nevado Pastoruri

As we mentioned earlier, the Pastoruri Mountain is located in the highest tropical mountain range in the world, the Cordillera Blanca, a part of the Peruvian Andes that holds peaks over 6,000 meters of elevation.

This snow-capped mountain in particular has been severely affected by climate change, meaning that if you’re eager to know its glacier and authenticity, you will need to hurry since it could disappear less than 10 years from now.

Therefore, the Climate Change Route has been created to raise awareness and show the global warming and human impact on Earth. But also, you’ll be able to experience much more than that, where beautiful lakes and the famous Queen of the Andes, Puya Raimondi, complement the entire scenery.

How to Deal with Altitude Sickness?

Due to the high elevation of these places, it is usual to see travelers experiencing dizziness, tiredness, headaches, and shortness of breath upon arrival, particularly if coming from low-altitude destinations. Make sure to follow these recommendations that will surely help you avoid and deal with altitude sickness:

- Keep yourself hydrated. Water is the best ally to fight and prevent this condition.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking at all costs. Alcohol is dehydrating, and smoking can worsen or cause shortness of breath.
- Eat a light but high-calorie diet. High altitude increases the need for fuel since you get dehydrated and burn carbs faster.
- Drink Coca tea or chew Coca leaves. This is a medicinal plant of the Andes, known for helping to ease any altitude sickness symptoms and improving acclimatization.
- Take it easy. Don’t commit to a physically demanding activity on the first 2-3 days upon arrival.

Some medicines that can help with any altitude sickness symptoms are Diamox or Soroche Pills. You can get them in almost any drugstore in Peru, nonetheless, we highly recommend consulting with a doctor before taking any of these medications.
