As we have mentioned in several blogs, we couldn’t be prouder of our cultural and historical heritage. There are so many details hidden in our lands that we barely can keep track of all of them.
Likewise, Peru was the development center of many ancient civilizations that somehow, as less known as they could be, managed to influence the evolution of many other societies in many aspects.
The Huaraz region is recognized as the Trekking Capital of Peru due to its flourishing and otherworldly natural heritage, especially since it is located near the Huascaran National Park.
However, the so-called Peruvian Switzerland also holds a great part of our prehispanic history, where places like Chavin de Huantar have captivated every one of its visitors, just like the Hoconpampa ruins and the waterfalls that surround it.
On this occasion, we will take you through the authentic scenery of the Huaraz region, where we’ll cross different Andean villages on the way to the archaeological site of Honcopampa.
Honcopampa is an ancient structure built by the Wari culture between 700 and 1000 AD. The site is composed of two sectors, one intended for religious purposes and the other to serve as a residential area with plazas, terraces, and other structures.
Its walls were built with carved stones, large and gray, where the mortar that joins them is covered with smaller rocks of a darker color. This style has been replicated throughout the complex, and used in the construction of buildings and walls.
The area is considered a rich and flourishing environment with a great variety of plant and animal species such as llamas and alpacas. In addition, some waterfalls can be found in the surrounding area, as well as the Chancos hot springs.
After we tour the archaeological site, we will continue to visit one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the region, located in the Yuracyacu Stream.
