As you already know, the Incas originated in the Andean highlands and though they expanded their empire from the Imperial City of Cusco, they certainly managed to build the most impressive administrative and military centers throughout Peruvian lands.
The civilizations of the coast couldn’t stand against the eminent force of the Incas since the famous civilization achieved total control over this low-altitude region as well. As time passed by, the Inca Empire spread across the South American continent, leaving a deeply-rooted legacy wherever they settled.
Tambo Colorado is one of these examples, where they merged their architectural and engineering style to a settlement previously inhabited by the Chincha culture. The site was used as a bridge between the Andean mountains and the coast.
Luckily, the pre-hispanic remains are impressively preserved though climate changes, human action and seismic activity have degraded it significantly. Nonetheless, you can still walk through its narrow streets and towering buildings.
We are proud to show you the best of our history, which is why we’ve come up with so many travel guides that will surely help you organize the best trip itinerary across Peru. Are you ready to uncover the mysteries of the Peruvian coast? Here’s what you should know about them!
Situated in the vast coast of Peru lies one of the most well-preserved archeological sites of the region. The Tambo Colorado was an Inca settlement with wari influences that served as an economic, administrative, residencial and ceremonial center.
It was traced back to the 15th century, in 1450 A.D. to be exact, and its original name could have been “Pucallacta” or “Pucahuasi,” two words derived from “Puka,” which means Red in the ancient Quechua Language. The structure was painted with yellow, white and red stripes, a paintwork that’s surprisingly maintained in some walls, hence the name.
The entire pre-columbian construction was made with rammed earth and adobes, blending the entire building with the beautiful scenery along the Pisco river valley.
However, there are some theories that the site was previously occupied by another civilization, which the Incas conquered and later adapted the site to their needs, presumably during the reign of the Inca Tupac Yupanqui.
As you already know, the Tambo Colorado is located near the town of Paracas, a few kilometers away from Lima. For that reason, it is an easy day trip from the so-called City of Kings since it only takes a 4-hour drive to get to this magical place.
Although you could get a taxi and explore it on your own, keep in mind that there are so many places and secrets that you won’t be able to see without a guide.
Therefore, we highly recommend you to plan ahead before getting to this destination so you can have a set time to sail across the ocean and explore the outstanding setting of Tambo Colorado.
