Tambo Colorado Tour

Tambo Colorado Tour

If you’ve been following our Peru travel guides, you surely are familiar with our extensive history and cultural expression. The coast of Peru was the birthplace of several important civilizations that paved the way to other cultures and influenced their development.

The Inca culture was no stranger to this, they certainly took the knowledge of their ancestors and the societies that they conquered and improved it in such an eminently powerful way.

As the Tahuantinsuyo Empire grew, they took advantage of different pre-Columbian settlements scattered along the coast and Tambo Colorado was one of them.

This ancient structure is believed to have been constructed by the Chincha or Wari civilizations and was later adapted to serve the administrative and ceremonial purposes of the Incas. It is one of the most well-preserved ruins south of Lima, where you’ll be able to spot their colorful walls and authentic architecture.

Peru's history is as extensive as you can imagine, thankfully we have this ancient legacy to remind us how our society has evolved throughout centuries. Find out everything about this excursion here!

About the Tour

The tour will take you through the impressive scenery of the Peruvian coast and desert, a historical journey where you’ll be able to discover one of the most important Inca settlements along the coastside.

Although there’s not much information about the site, archeological findings point it out as an administrative, ceremonial and residential center of the Inca people though it was previously inhabited by the Chincha culture and presumably built by the Wari civilization.

However, Tambo Colorado served as a bridge between the Andean mountains and the coast, allowing trading and administrative control around the region.

On this tour, you’ll get to uncover all the mysteries about the site, as well as exploring its ancient buildings and narrow streets. Here you’ll be able to see the adobe and rammed earth constructions, the trapezoidal niches and doors, the central plaza, storehouses, residential areas and the fortress.

Tambo Colorado is characterized for its incredible preservation, where its adobe walls still maintain part of the red, yellow and white painting that once covered them.
