Arequipa City Tour

Arequipa City Tour

Make your way through the cobbled-stone streets of Arequipa and start a journey towards colonial times, discovering its secrets and exceptionally-preserved beauty. The Historical City Center of Arequipa is one of the most visually striking urban sceneries in Peru since it holds the pure essence of an important era in our country.

Even if you’re not into history that much, you surely won’t like to miss visiting these outstanding colonial structures, where the city seemed to grow exponentially over time without leaving the features that make it unique behind.

Arequipa’s old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, housing over 500 historical monuments that date back to the 18th century. Each colonial mansion, administrative center, and religious temple is built with Sillar Blanco, a volcanic stone that originated thousands of years ago, the reason behind the famous name: White City of Arequipa.

Part of Peru’s extensive history is told in each corner of the city. The colonial era is heavily marked in these streets, and though there’s so much more to know, Arequipa will certainly give you a glimpse at one of the most important times in our society.

What to See?

The tour will take you through the main streets of the historical center, and our guide will tell you about the history of each place and the city itself. Here’s what you’re going to visit:

1. Plaza de Armas
Like most colonial centers in Peru, Arequipa also holds a beautiful main square at its heart, from where the city was distributed and the main religious buildings were built. This location will be the starting point of the tour, where you’re going to learn about the history that makes this city so unique.

From here, you’ll get to see the Cathedral of Arequipa, La Compañía de Jesús Church, and Nuestra Señora de la Merced Church, three catholic temples built with the emblematic volcanic rock of the region.

2. Yanahuara Viewpoint
Right at the heart of one of the oldest neighborhoods in Arequipa’s old town, lies the Yanahuara Viewpoint, a special place composed of several sillar portals that overlook the entire colonial barrio and grant a splendid view of the Chachani and Misti volcanoes.

The famous Yanahuara Viewpoint in Arequipa was founded in 1750, just next to the San Juan de Yanahuara Church. On the way to this attraction, you’ll be captivated by the cobbled stone streets and old sillar houses along the route.

3. Carmen Alto Viewpoint
Located 4 kilometers from the main square, at the right side of the Chili Volcano, lies an outstanding viewing spot that overlooks the entire Chili Valley. The Carmen Alto Viewpoint will let you admire the entire natural scenery, where beautiful croplands, pre-Inca terraces, and the imposing Chachani and Misti volcanoes will leave you spellbound by their beauty.

4. Balneario de Tingo
It is a recreational park composed of several outdoor attractions like swimming pools, courts, an artificial lagoon, and much more. On our stop here, you’ll be able to ride a horse or even take a boat trip through the lagoon (both optional).

5. Mansión del Fundador
One of the most important colonial mansions is located on the outskirts of Arequipa. The Mansión del Fundador was owned by the founder of Arequipa, Garcí Manuel de Carbajal. The site offers an extensive collection of colonial artwork, furniture, and much more. You’ll be able to uncover every one of its rooms while having a glimpse at what life was like during that era.

6. Molino de Sabandia
It dates back to 1621, meaning that it’s a 400-year-old mill tower built entirely of white ashlar, the volcanic rock found in the quarries of the Chachani Volcano. The mill is located in the Sabandia district, 20 minutes away from the historic center.

7. Paucarpata Terraces
Paucarpata is one of the oldest districts in Arequipa, it was founded in 1572 though it was inhabited hundreds of years ago by a civilization that predated the Incas. These beautiful terraces are recognized for the flourishing vegetation that grows in them, offering an authentic scenery of Arequipa’s countryside.

The Arequipa City Tour will take you on a journey across the different attractions of the region, showing you the contrast between the colonial era and the nature that surrounds the entire city.
