Although the Nazca lines were studied for many years by different national and international archeologists, it was Maria Reiche a German-born Peruvian mathematician who dedicated over 50 years of her life to the understanding and preservation of these ancient geoglyphs.
The famous geoglyphs in the Peruvian desert were first acknowledged in 1547 by the historian Pedro Cieza de Leon but it wasn’t until 1929 that several pilots reported some strange figures carved in the Nazca pampas, which led many archeologists to carry out investigations on the site.
However, the Nazca lines’ real purpose will remain a mystery until a new finding comes to surface since there’s not much evidence about what the place could have been during pre-Columbian times.
Maria Reiche did achieve a breakthrough with her 50-year investigation and caused a great impact in the world, granting the site recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
Nowadays, her little home in the middle of the desert showcases the documentation of her life-long project as well as many other archeological findings.
This private tour will take you to the heart of the Nazca desert to visit a museum that once was the house of the iconic Maria Reiche. The site is located at the 421,3 km of the Panamericana Sur highway, almost 27 kilometers away from the city of Nazca.
The Maria Reiche Museum holds all the information and documentation gathered from the research made by Dr. Maria Reiche Newman, along with maps, planes, pictures, mummies and archeological artifacts. Her remains are also found in this location. Learn more about her work here.
