Shopping in the Sacred Valley

Shopping in the Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley of the Incas has beautiful landscapes. It's also a great place to get the finest souvenirs to surprise your loved ones or yourself. Before visiting Machu Picchu, let’s see some markets you can keep in mind when in this picturesque valley.

Pisac Artisan Market

The Pisac Artisan Market is one of the most well-known in the region. People from native Quechua villages in the surrounding mountains travel to Pisac. They come to sell food and buy supplies for the coming week. This draws large crowds to its popular Sunday market.

Pisac is a small community 45 minutes bus ride outside Cusco. The Village has lively residents and a marketplace and is also well known for being the gateway to the Sacred Valley.

Many vendors in the market sell a wide range of goods and souvenirs for visitors to take home. These include Andean instruments, silver jewelry, ponchos, hats, pottery, alpaca products, and weavings. These tourist-oriented souvenir sellers take up a large share of the market. Open daily from 9 am to 4.30 pm, the handcraft market is a great place to get gifts all in one place.

Chinchero Textiles Market

Native Incas inhabited Chinchero community located in the Sacred Valley. The locals produce handmade, vintage fabrics. These fabrics are their main source of income.

We use the term "old fashioned" to state that people made it using traditional methods. This was like the Incas did in their era.

The entire collection is manufactured by hand at Centro de Textiles Tradicionales, without synthetic materials. The wool used to make Peruvian textiles comes from sheep, vicuñas, or alpacas (including baby alpacas). Natural dyes are used to color the wool, and even salt and lemon can achieve a subtle color change.

The entire process of dying the fabrics and creating the pieces is demonstrated and explained, and the prints are usually classic Andean designs. This is a site where you may buy a piece created on the spot using your chosen colors. This is all within the bounds of the local culture.

Ollantaytambo Artisan Market

This market is situated in the town of Ollantaytambo and is open every day. This market is at the entrance of the Ollantaytambo archaeological site. It offers a wide variety of local handicrafts.

They come from both the residents and Andean communities. The communities visit the market to sell their products.

The handcrafted goods people sell here include pottery, wood carvings, paintings, and mementos, is one of the most accessible and well-known handicraft markets.

If you want a souvenir, visit and buy some of the available handicrafts. You can explore the market before or after you see the Ollantaytambo site.

Maras Market

Peru's exquisite pink salt is hand-gathered in the ponds of the Maras Salt Mines. Local families generally gather the salt, claiming the right to extract and sell it. The Marasal company frequently sells this around Peru, including local markets and other well-known places.

However, pink salt from Peru is available for purchase, as is the location for many visitors who arrive to enjoy the experience. The salt has a beautiful, distinctive pale pink color and a twisted, granular texture.

It has a smoother and more nuanced flavor than typical table salt. But don't be deceived; adding more does not follow. It is the perfect addition to any meal you create.

In addition to the marketplaces and salt mines, the Sacred Valley has a range of artisan workshops and boutiques where visitors can purchase unique, premium goods. There is something for every taste and budget, from locally produced culinary items to hand-made jewelry.
