During the pandemic, the world has been adapting itself to a new normality. Unfortunately, many countries were affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, which is why Peru has implemented different protocols to overcome this now common problem.
However, to stop the virus from spreading, the Peruvian government canceled international and national flights, paralyzing the whole country by starting the lockdown on March 16th until July 1st.
Luckily, after all that stressful time, tourism is being gradually activated, which means that many tourist attractions in Peru have reopened, and Machu Picchu is one of them.
Although international flights are now possible between many countries within South America and the rest of the world, there are new safety protocols to follow before and during the visit to Machu Picchu.
On November 1st, Machu Picchu reopened its doors to tourism again. Although the pandemic isn’t over yet, new safety protocols have been implemented to guarantee a safe travel experience. One of the benefits of traveling during these times is that most of the archeological sites within Cusco are significantly less crowded, including the famous Inca citadel.
Currently, the permanent use of face masks, social distancing, hand sanitizing, and shoe disinfection are mandatory throughout the country. Although Machu Picchu was only authorized to receive only 50% of its normal capacity, nowadays it is operating with total normality. Likewise, Children under 12 are now allowed in the archeological site. Many of the restrictions were lifted, but some others remain in force:
- To go up to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes and back, you can purchase a roundtrip bus ticket or take the trail from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, something that wasn’t available before. However, if taking the bus ride, you must wear a face shield and face mask during the trip.
- If traveling by train, you must present a sworn statement of not having any COVID-19 symptoms, the permanent use of face shields and face masks are mandatory throughout the trip. The train’s capacity has been reduced to 50%.
- Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountains are currently available. However, you must book the hike permit long in advance.
These measures ensure the safety of all passengers. We encourage you to follow these protocols to protect yourself and others; that way, we’ll have succeeded by traveling responsibly through the country.
You may not know this but when Machu Picchu reopened its doors, the only way to get there was by train or bus. Today, you can take any of the optional hikes to Machu Picchu, including the Classic Inca Trail.
If you wish to visit the Inca citadel, you must be in the region of Cusco since this will be the starting point of your adventure. The Imperial City of Cusco can be reached by plane or bus, but it all dependson the time you might have. Remember, you could either take a quick trip to visit the citadel and its surroundings, or a longer route to experience different places in between.
- Going to Machu Picchu by bus could be very exhausting since this is a 6-hour drive from Cusco to Hidroelectrica plus a 3-hour walk through the rail tracks from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes. Keep in mind that during the rainy season, heavy downpour of rain is expected throughout this region.
- The quickest way to get to Machu Picchu is by train, either you take the train from Ollantaytambo or the Poroy train station near Cusco, you’ll be arriving to Machu Picchu in a few hours, giving you time to explore the beautiful Aguas Calientes town and then head towards the highlight of your trip.
